Dental Implants

Dental implants have exceptional long term success rates.

A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root and provides a long-lasting and discreet choice of treatment for missing teeth.

Always made to feel completely at ease in this dental practice. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Very caring professionals who make one feel immediately at ease, combined with expert knowledge, advice and treatment.

At Lodge Dental, we have selected to use the Straumann® Dental Implant System. With its roots in Swiss precision engineering and clinical excellence, the Straumann® Dental lmplant System is renowned for its exceptional quality and reliability. It is one of the most extensively scientifically documented implant systems in the world, comprising surgical implants and prosthetic components that connect the implant with the crown of the replacement tooth.

The dental implant is a titanium screw which is placed into the jawbone where it can support crowns or dentures in a similar way to roots supporting natural teeth. The bone surrounding the implant will gradually fuse to it, holding the implant firmly in place. A false tooth (a crown, bridge or denture) is then fitted to the top of the implant enabling you to smile and eat with confidence.

What can I expect from an Implant Consultation?

At the initial consultation the dentist will assess the feasibility of providing dental implant treatment. X-rays and often a CBCT scan will be taken to determine the optimal position for an implant, how many implants can be placed in the gap and the quality and volume of bone that is available. A written treatment plan & estimate will be formulated detailing the sequence of treatment and associated costs.

How many implants will I need?

You don't necessarily need one implant per missing tooth. The physical strength of titanium implants is high enough that in most cases 4 implants will be strong enough to support a bridge with a full set of teeth on it for years.

How long is the process?

Implant treatment normally involves several stages that take place over a period of time from three to nine months.

Implant placement

Implant placement is a relatively simple minor surgical procedure performed under sterile conditions. The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic. If, during assessment, the bone density levels are deemed low,a number of options are available for bone regeneration such as a bone graft. A gum graft might also be recommended for some patients.

Integration period

Dental implants can take from six weeks to six months to fuse with your own bone. During this period, temporary dentures or bridgework can be worn as appropriate.

The restorative phase

Once integrated, the implants can be brought into function with a variety of definitive restorations ranging from a single crown, bridge or removable overdenture. A dental technician works closely with the dentist to construct these restorations.

Maintenance

Following completion of implant treatment, you must regularly and thoroughly clean the restorations as instructed. Our dental hygienist will also advise on care and maintenance. Regular visits to the dentist are essential after implant treatment to that the health of the soft tissue, bone levels and integrity of the restoration can be reviewed.

How long will my dental implants last?

Attendance at your regular maintenance appointments will have the biggest impact on how long the implants will last. If your implants are well looked after you can expect them to last for many years.

Most people are suitable for dental implants, please contact us if you are interested to find out more or book in for an implant consultation.
