**How to keep your teeth clean**
* Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about 2 minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

* Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats your teeth if you don't brush them properly. It contributes to gum disease and tooth decay.

* Tooth brushing stops plaque building up. Try to make sure you clean every surface of all your teeth.

**When should I brush my teeth?**
* Brush your teeth twice a day for about 2 minutes each time. Brush them last thing before you go to bed, as night-time brushing is important, and on 1 other occasion.

* Dental healthcare professionals may give you more advice based on your own dental health and needs.

**Should I use an electric or manual toothbrush?**
* It doesn't matter whether you use an electric or manual toothbrush.

* They're both equally good, as long as you clean all the surfaces of all your teeth and you use fluoride toothpaste.

* But some people find it easier to clean their teeth thoroughly with an electric toothbrush.

**What should I look for in a toothbrush?**
* For most adults, a toothbrush with a small head and a compact, angled arrangement of long and short round-end bristles is fine. Medium or soft bristles are best for most people.

* But making sure you thoroughly clean your teeth at least twice a day is more important than the type of brush you use. If in doubt, ask a dental healthcare professional.

**What type of toothpaste should I use?**
* It's important to use a toothpaste with the right concentration of fluoride.

* Check the packaging to find out how much fluoride each brand contains.

* Adults should use a toothpaste that contains at least 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride. Children don't need to use special children's toothpaste. Children of all ages can use family toothpaste, as long as it contains 1,350 to 1,500ppm fluoride. Children aged 3 and under who don't have tooth decay can use a lower strength children's toothpaste, but make sure it contains at least 1,000ppm fluoride.
Children under the age of 3 should use just a smear of toothpaste. Children aged 3 to 6 years should use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste. Make sure children don't lick or eat toothpaste from the tube.
Your dentist may advise you or your child to use a toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride, if you need it.

**How to brush your teeth**
* Make sure you clean all the surfaces of all your teeth, which should take about 2 minutes.

* Remember to brush the inside surfaces, outside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

**How to help children brush their teeth**
* Children need to be helped or supervised brushing their teeth until they're at least 7 years old.

* Get more tips on taking care of children's teeth

* Don't rinse with water straight after toothbrushing
After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste.

* Don't rinse your mouth immediately after brushing, as it'll wash away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste.

* Rinsing dilutes it and reduces its preventative effects.

**How to use dental floss**
* Flossing isn't just for dislodging food wedged between your teeth.

* Regular flossing may also reduce gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath by removing plaque that forms along the gum line.

* It's best to floss before brushing your teeth.
 
* Take 30cm to 45cm of floss or dental tape and grasp it so you have 3cm or 4cm of floss taut between your hands.
Slip the floss or dental tape between the teeth and into the area between your teeth and gums, as far as it'll go.
Curve the floss into a C-shape and then gently slide it up and down each tooth to clean it and remove any food and plaque.
How to use interdental brushes
You can use interdental brushes or single-tufted brushes instead of flossing, especially if there are gaps between your teeth.

* The brush should fit snugly between the teeth.

* It is not advised to use wooden toothpicks to remove trapped food from between your teeth as you may damage your gums, which could lead to an infection.

* Your dentist or hygienist can advise you on the best way to clean between your teeth.

**Should I use mouthwash?**
* Using a mouthwash that contains fluoride can help prevent tooth decay.

* But don't use mouthwash (even a fluoride one) straight after brushing your teeth because it will wash away the concentrated fluoride in the toothpaste left on your teeth.

* Choose a different time to use mouthwash, such as after lunch.

* Don't eat or drink for 30 minutes after using a fluoride mouthwash.

# Is there pain or discomfort?
You may get some sensitivity; however, your dentist will give you easy-to-use desensitisers to take home, which will work immediately. You will also receive a tube of Enlighten Serum toothpaste to brush with, while you wait for your trays, this also helps with sensitivity.
 
# How long does it take?
Philips: A 2 hours appointment for in-chair treatmen; with home kit, wear for 60minutes for 3 days. Take home kits only, wear for 30-90 minutes once daily for 2 weeks. 
Enlighten: 3 weeks after your dentist delivers your Enlighten whitening trays. The first 2 weeks the trays are worn overnight. On the third week for 1 hour a day.
 
# How long does it last?
Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenance, wearing the trays for 1 night every other month. Continuing to brush with Enlighten White will also prolong results.
 
# Is it safe?
Completely, the materials used in Whitening have been used in dentistry for over 100 years.

Clear aligners have come a long way since they entered the cosmetic dentistry world in '97. In those days, the road to straight teeth was a long and painful one. You had to endure many years of bracket and wire treatments before graduating to a retainer. Today, removable aligners have given the world a prettier (and faster) road to a perfect smile. Invisalign might have been the first of its kind, but other brands have been entering the sector since 2006. Today's products can fix gaps, underbites, open bites, and crowding. Through the wonders of e-commerce, you can even buy a cheaper alternative without leaving your sofa. That doesn't mean you should, though. An experienced orthodontist is a critical part of every teeth-perfecting journey. # How it Works
Traditional braces use pressure to draw your teeth into alignment. Clear aligners use a mold to achieve a similar effect. The process involves more than just a customized aligner. Before you receive your aligner, your cosmetician will use a combination of X-rays, teeth impressions, and photographs to assess your needs. A technician will then create a three-dimensional rendering and a digital model of your existing smile. This is more complex than you might think because it takes skill and knowledge to understand how your teeth need to move to achieve the ultimate objective. Over the coming weeks, your technician and cosmetician will work together to create the perfect treatment plan. Once your aligners have arrived in the office, you will wear them for a few weeks, removing them only to eat and brush. You'll move to a new set of aligners as your teeth correct themselves.

For many patients, that marks the end of the alignment journey. If you're a more complex case, though, your cosmetician will work with you to refine your results. Some of your teeth might still be out of place, so we might give you a few refinement models to achieve consummate perfection. Once you've completed your last tray, we'll give you a set of retainers to maintain your effects as your bone settles into its new position. Teeth tend to shift for the rest of your life, so ideally, you'll return to your retainer regularly in the years that follow.

# Deciding on Clear Aligners or Braces
Aligners and braces work on the same principle, but their comfort levels and side effects vary. Braces are still ideal for severe overcrowding. They're a pocket-friendly alternative that's always fastened to your teeth. Clear aligners usually have a shorter treatment period, but a higher price. Their removability also makes them an attractive option, especially when you want to show your smile at an important event. You'll usually only have to wear your aligners for 22 hours a day. They also make oral hygiene far easier to achieve. You will brush and floss as you always have. How much do Dental Implants Cost? Lodge Dental, Wales

The world has been using [dental implants](https://www.lodgedental.co.uk/treatment/implants) for longer than you might think. In ancient China, they were made from carved wooden pegs. Even Egyptian kings and Celtic royalty used metal jaw implants, but it was only in recent years that titanium alloys could be secured directly into the bone, one missing tooth at a time. Once implants are fitted, they feel and look identical to the natural tooth. More importantly, they don't require special attention. They're easier to care for than bridges and more comfortable than dentures, but the success of an implant relies on the body's capacity to integrate the titanium into the bone. Osseointegration problems are one of the core reasons for implant failures, but technology has come a long way since it was approved by the FDA in 2015. Today, X-guide technology, ceramic attachments, and Sirona Orthophos scanners have taken implantology to an entirely new level of success. Guided implants have a failure rate that's three times lower than that of free-hand placements, so they're pushing implantology into a brighter future.

# How Dental Implants Work
Dental implants are small, bevelled surfaces that are fused into the jawbone. The tooth crown is attached to the implant, and within a few months, natural bone forms around it. If there are two or more missing teeth, we might use a support bridge construction. Just like traditional bridges, an implant bridge usually relies on a maximum of four supports, which are fitted with a snapping mechanism. # Are You the Right Patient?
Implants can only succeed in the right conditions. Healthy patients and healthy mouths offer the best odds of success and the lowest dental implant cost. You need enough bone for a successful implant, so if you have low sinuses or significant bone loss, you might need a medical procedure to build up your bone mass before you're a candidate for an implant. Sinus lifts can also help to prevent intrusion. Implants can also fail if the blood vessels in your gum are constricted. Smokers have a failure rate of up to 20%. Tobacco products can also increase the risk of infection and blood clots, so we advise you to avoid tobacco products a few months before and after surgery.

# What to Expect from Surgery
Implant surgery is a relatively easy and pain-free experience that's performed in the clinician's chair. Before your cosmetic practitioner considers it, they will perform a Straumann Orthophos scan to ensure that you're a candidate. A bone graft will be performed, if necessary, usually with synthetic material or bone substitutes. The implant's root will be placed deep into the bone under local anaesthesia. Your clinician may want to wait before placing the crown itself, so you may need to wear a denture for a few weeks. Once osseointegration has taken place, you can finally enjoy your new artificial tooth.

In some cases, an additional surgery will be needed to reopen the gum before the abutment is placed, which adds to your dental implant cost. This additional step will require two weeks to settle before you can finally enjoy your new tooth. You can choose one of two crowns: A removable product includes a plastic gum and a mounted abutment that snaps out of place for daily cleaning. A fixed product is permanently cemented into the abutment. After surgery, you might experience some mild facial swelling and bruising. Now it's up to you to give your implant its best chance of success. The better your oral hygiene, the more likely you'll experience implant success.

# How Guided Implants Work
Dental implants might feel like a routine procedure, but they require an exceptional level of precision and detail. Guided implant placement is helping clinicians to achieve both. Computer-generated guides to improve accuracy while reducing the cost of dental implants. This has a drastic impact on failure rates. We provide this option to give you an idea of what your smile could look like once treatment is complete. It is not an exact science – dentistry is an art – but it offers a good indication of what you can expect for your peace of mind.

Plus, it’s a super simple process for you.

Step 1 – The dentist will take a full set of photos from different angles, as well as a state of the art 3D scan of your teeth.

Step 2 – These images will then be used to digitally plan & design your new smile and the dentist will work in collaboration with the dental laboratory technician to create a preview.

Step 3 – When you return to the practice, you’ll be able to try the ‘trial smile’ in your mouth. It will simply fit over your existing teeth and you’ll be able to speak, take some photos and see how your new smile is likely to look and feel. It also gives the opportunity to assess the occlusion and provide feedback to the technician.

His early training included rotations in restorative dentistry and oral & maxillofacial surgery at the Bristol Dental Hospital, followed by head and neck surgery, facial deformity and trauma at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. Dr Brennand Roper completed a clinical masters in prosthodontics at the University of Edinburgh, and two nationally accredited specialist programmes, Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, as a Specialty Registrar whilst at the Edinburgh Dental Institute between 2010 and 2017. He went on to become a Consultant in Glasgow before returning to Bristol in 2022.
 
Dr Brennand Roper is the restorative lead for dental developmental deformities, cleft and hypodontia at the Bristol Dental Hospital and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). Matthew also has years of experience working as a private referrals specialist.
 
In 2018, he was elected to the UK and Ireland Young ITI Committee, and onto the leadership team in 2022. He also sits on the Global Young ITI Committee. Dr Brennand Roper is an examiner for The University of Bristol and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
 
Matthew is an invited speaker both nationally and internationally with publications in peer reviewed journals. His research interests and international grants lie within the fields of hard and soft tissue regenerative procedures associated with hypodontia and implant therapies.

# What’s the difference between our whitening treatments?
 
The difference between take-home and in-practice whitening is where treatment takes place and how long it takes to see results. For both, the process begins with digital impressions of your teeth and gums using our state-of-the-art iTero digital scanners. These impressions are used to fabricate custom trays that fit your mouth perfectly – the whitening gel is applied to these trays and placed over the teeth for whitening to begin.
 
If you choose take-home treatment, these trays will be fitted in the practice and you’ll be shown how to apply the whitening gel and place/remove the trays yourself. You will be instructed to treat the teeth in this way for up to 30 minutes twice a day for 2 weeks – so you can fit it around your daily life with ease.
 
In-practice treatment is just that – provided entirely in the practice. This involves a 2-hour appointment, during which your dental professional will apply the whitening solution (don’t worry, you’ll be in a comfortable position and you can still swallow as normal). Our comfortable chairs and big TV screens mean you can kick back, relax and catch up on your favourite show whilst your teeth are whitening. In-practicing whitening results are immediate and your teeth can become up to 7 shades whiter within just one appointment.
 
Both whitening treatments provide safe and effective ways to whitening your teeth.
 
# Professional versus DIY whitening
 
You will come across lots of ‘home remedies’ or ‘hacks’ for whitening your teeth at home online, especially on social media. It’s important to be aware that these are not always what they promise. At best, they will be completely ineffective. At worst, they can do significant damage to your teeth and gums, which may require extensive professional treatment to fix later on. Many of the products you can buy online contain questionable ingredients, including some that can cause burns on the gums or cheeks. We understand that cheaper prices may be tempting but DIY whitening is not always a cheap or quick fix!

Here are some things about dental implant treatment that you may not have known:

# You can get full bridge implants 
A prosthesis (row of false teeth) can be attached to dental implant(s) to replace several or all of your upper or lower teeth. This may be a fixed or removable bridge. The second option means you can take the bridge out the mouth for easy cleaning. It then clips back into place securely for confident eating, speaking or laughing.

# One dental implant can support more than one prosthetic tooth
In fact, a single dental implant can anchor a prosthesis with several false teeth attached. The suitability of this treatment depends on many factors, such as location of the missing tooth and the health/volume of the jaw bone.

# Taking care of your implant(s) with regular dental hygiene appointments can help treatment results last for many years. 
While it is different for everyone, dental implants can last more than 20 years. However, this is only possible if you look after your dental implant(s) carefully. Ensure excellent at-home oral hygiene as well as frequent check-ups at the dental practice. 

# In some cases, you can replace a tooth with a dental implant in one treatment. 
Otherwise known as ‘same day teeth’ or ‘fixed teeth in a day’, this enables some patients to have a failing tooth removed, the dental implant placed and restoration fitted on the same day. With several experts in dental implantology and oral surgery at Lodge Dental, we can deliver this fast and convenient treatment safely and effectively to suitable candidates. # There are vegetarian and vegan treatment options available.

Mike Gray wins clinical award - Lodge Dental

Hot on the heels of Dr Chloe Harrington-Taylor being awarded Best Young Dentist for the South West & Wales at the recent Private Dentistry Awards, we now have another winner in the Lodge Dental team!
 
At the Dentistry Clinical Case Awards 2022, Mike Gray won the restorative category for his Full Mouth Rehabilitation Case. Full mouth rehabilitation is a highly complex and technical procedure to restore or replace all the teeth in a patient’s mouth, with often life-changing results.  
 
Mike beat some fierce competition to have his work recognised by the panel of eminent judges – this is an incredible achievement and we are all very proud of him.

James graduated from King’s College London in 2016 and has worked in private practice since that time.

He has chosen to focus his practice on Oral Surgery and Complex Restorative Dentistry, alongside undergoing training in Implant Surgery. He accepts referrals from other dental practitioners for complex/failed extractions and the removal of difficult wisdom teeth.

He has achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry and has been awarded a Fellowship in the British Academy of Aesthetic Restorative and Implant Dentistry. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Surgery and is close to finishing an MSc in the same field, alongside being a member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons. James’ plan for the future is to focus his practice further on Oral and Implant Surgery so he can provide this to a very high standard in an area of dentistry he is very passionate about. In addition to this, he has been running the Emergency Dental Service Clinics alongside the Local Health Board for the past five years which has exposed him to a large variety of acute dental conditions and their varied presentations, which has been an invaluable experience.
