Quit Smoking for Your Health
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health and it’s never too late to start. Whether you’ve tried before or this is your first attempt, NHS stop‑smoking support gives you a far better chance of becoming smoke‑free for good.
Every cigarette you don’t smoke is a step toward a healthier future.
Why quitting matters
Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable illness in the UK. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease and several cancers. But the benefits of stopping begin almost immediately:
After 20 minutes your pulse starts to return to normal
After 24 hours carbon monoxide levels drop and your lungs begin to clear
After 2–12 weeks breathing improves and circulation gets better
Long term your risk of serious illness continues to fall the longer you stay smoke‑free
Your body starts healing the moment you stop.
Free NHS support in Wales Help Me Quit is the national NHS stop‑smoking service for Wales, offering free, friendly and confidential support to help you quit successfully. You don’t need a GP referral and support is available in Welsh or English.
