This two day hands-on course run at Lodge Training provides an insight into Mike's unique approach to modern day ceramic.  

**Course Overview**

DAY 1

Consultation: Conducting your exam including assessment of occlusion and biotype, what to
look out for, formulating and costing a treatment plan, and communication to the patient.

Planning: Photography (oral and portrait), scanning, smile design principles, digital facially driven wax-up, lab considerations.

Trial smile: Unique stent, evaluation, modification.

DAY 2

Preparation (or lack of): Shade taking, guides, preparation principles, retraction, scanning. (Will touch on conventional ceramic preparations - protocol can be applied to all).

Prototypes: aesthetic and functional evaluation, communication with lab.

Fit: Try-in, adjustment and seating of ceramic, isolation techniques, cementation process.

Maintenance.

**Orthodontic Referrals - when and what to refer?**

In this Study Club, Caryl will be discussing timing of referrals i.e. when to refer early and what treatments can be done for interceptive treatment to reduce the severity of malocclusions; what to refer if patients don’t want to wait for treatment as well as different types of appliances. She will also cover when fixed braces might be better than aligners and combined option of ortho and orthognathic surgery to correct skeletal disproportion.

# What is Direct access?

In 2013, General Dental Council removed its barrier to Direct Access for some dental care professionals after considering the impact on patient safety. Before then, every member of the dental team had to work on the prescription of a dentist. This meant that patients had to be seen by a dentist before being treated by any other member of the dental team.

Direct access means patients can see a hygienist without having to see a dentist first.

# Why would I use this service over a standard hygiene appointment?

Direct access offers greater choice and flexibility for patients, without having to have a check up with a dentist first.   It also offer patients the chance to try out the practice before joining as a patient.

# What happens during an appointment?

Nicky will start by checking your soft tissues and general gum health.  She will then assess your oral hygiene and offer oral hygiene advice. The appointment will finish with a thorough clean and polish of the teeth.

# How long will it take?

An initial appointment will last for 30 minutes although Nicky will let you know if further appointments are recommended.

# Will I have to see a dentist at some point?

Regular dental check-ups with a dentist are still advised and if the hygienist identifies any issues during the appointment, they will advise you to see a dentist.

# What will it cost me?

The appointment will cost £95.

Increase in NHS prices 1st April 2024 - Lodge Dental

This is the first increase since April 2020 and is necessary due to extreme pressures on health budgets in Wales.

However around 50% of patients do not have to pay for their NHS dental treatment.

NHS dental examinations in Wales will still remain free for those aged under 25 and over 60.

Richard will be discussing 'The Iconic Solution - Maximising minimal intervention'.

In 2014, Richard won Best Young Dentist UK at the Dentistry Awards and in 2018, he was recognised as an Accredited Member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He was the youngest dentist ever to have achieved this accolade.

Having won multiple awards for his Aesthetic Dentistry, in 2022 Richard was invited to be one of the judges at the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.

He has a wide range of expertise in cosmetic and aesthetic restorative dentistry including smile design, composite bonding and composite veneers, ceramic veneers & crowns, restoring worn down teeth and removing white spots from teeth. Richard has years of experience in working as part of a multi-specialist team in the treatment of complex cases. It is these skills that landed him on the Tatler recommended dentist list.

In his spare time, Richard enjoys skiing, scuba diving, spending time with his young family and sausage dog!

James graduated from King’s College London in 2016 and has worked in private practice since that time.

He has chosen to focus his practice on Oral Surgery and Complex Restorative Dentistry, alongside undergoing training in Implant Surgery. He accepts referrals from other dental practitioners for complex/failed extractions and the removal of difficult wisdom teeth.

He has achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry and has been awarded a Fellowship in the British Academy of Aesthetic Restorative and Implant Dentistry. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Surgery and is close to finishing an MSc in the same field, alongside being a member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons.
